An automatic central buffer coupling of a rail vehicle has a service line coupling 1 comprising a housing 5 telescopically mounted on rear part carried by a frame 16 pivoted at 15 to a support 14 rigidly mounted on the coupling head 3, the housing 5 being spring-urged forwards and engaging stops 13 on the head 3 when the buffer coupling is uncoupled, the housing 5 having centring elements 8, 9 and a projection 10, such that when the buffer coupling is coupled to a counter coupling, the housings 5, 5<SP>1</SP> are pushed back by each other until the coupling heads are fully coupled and the faces 12, 12<SP>1</SP> of the projections 10, 10<SP>1</SP> then engage and slide over each other thus moving the housings 5, 5<SP>1</SP> forwards and away from the stops 13, 13<SP>1</SP> so that the housings have freedom to accommodate lateral play of the couplings, but are centred by the elements 8, 9. A cover 18 for the ends of lines 4 is carried by a lever 19 pivoted on pin 21 on the housing 5 but spring-urged to the Fig. 5 position when the coupling head 3 is not coupled. On coupling, the housing 5 moves back until the rear of the lever 19 strikes an abutment 26 on the frame 16 when a bolt 22 moves out of indentation 28 so releasing the cover lever which pivots until its nose 25 engages behind a lever 27, which holds the nose only until coupling is complete. In another embodiment, the cover 18 is controlled by a pivoted lever actuated by the counter coupling housing 5 so as to initially move the cover lever 19 forwards so that the cover is lifted off the lines 4, and the lever 19 clears stops on the housing so that the cover 18 can swing clear of the lines 4, where it is held until the couplings are uncoupled.
