Abstract
912,178. Automatic couplings and centralising gear. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION Ltd. Sept. 23, 1960 [Sept. 24, 1959], No. 32462/59. Class 103(5). An automatic coupler head 16 is supported by a self-centering shelf 21 engaging in a pocket 22 in the head and extending from a support 24 vertically journailed by trunnions 25 engaging in slots 26, so that the support 24 may slide rearwardly against a spring in an external housing 27, the head and shelf being rotatable about horizontal and vertical axes and being held together from relative side to side motion by wings 32 which extend from the pocket 22 and engage on either side of the shelf. The wings 32 enter the housing 27 during extreme buffing. In a modification, Fig. 7, the wings are replaced by a stirrup 42 pivoted at 43, and an outwardly spring-urged extension 40 of the shelf engages the head pocket. The housing 33 is trunnioned in an intermediate housing 36 which is connected by a bracket 38 to the draw gear and slides in an external housing 37.
