Abstract

A bundle of molten polymeric filaments 3 is extruded from a spinneret 2, in a spinning assembly 4 passed through an aperture 18 in a shutter 17, said shutter being formed in at least two reciprocable parts 17a and 17b, into a spinning chimney 8. The lip 16 of the shutter engages in a slot 15 in a shutter guide plate 7, which plate is open on one side to allow the reciprocation of the shutter. One part 17b of the shutter carries a handle 20 for the removal thereof. The engaging surfaces of parts 17a and 17b are stepped to prevent cooling air, passing from the back to the open front 12 of the chimney 8 through the screen 13, from flowing up through the join in the shutter on to the spinneret plate. The engaging surfaces of the parts of the shutter may also be formed as a tongue and slot or they may be of zig-zag shape.
