Abstract
1,233,440. Lift trucks; container engaging devices. CRAVENS HOMALLOY (SHEFFIELD) Ltd. 14 April, 1969 [24 May, 1968], No. 25046/68. Heading B8H. A mechanical handling device for containers includes a truck 10 having a lift 12 carrying a spreader 14 by means of a coupling 16. The spreader 14 is shown supporting a container 18 through lifting spigots and locating pins (not shown) engaging corner castings 20 on the container 18. The coupling 16 comprises a carrier 22 supported by lugs from the lift 12 and pivoted thereto by pivots 24 to enable it to tilt about a horizontal axis parallel to the spreader 14. A substantially horizontal shaft 26 is pivoted at 28 on a lug 30 on the carrier 22, Fig. 2, and an hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly 34 extends between the shaft 26 and the carrier 22 near the other end of the shaft 26 which is accommodated in a slot 36. The shaft 26 supports the spreader 14 by lugs 40 which is thus capable of limited rotational movement in its own plane about a horizontal axis, i.e. the pivot 28. The spreader 14 shown is 20 by 8 feet, but Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a spreader with two sets of lifting spigots and locating pins adapted to lift containers of 30 or 40 feet in length.
