[Also in Division C3] Ether and polyether alcohols are prepared by reacting an alcohol with an alkylene oxide in the presence of a tertiary oxonium salt catalyst of the formula in which R 1 and R 2 each represent an aliphatic C 1-24 radical or an aromatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic ring system with 5 to 20 carbon atoms in the ring and X is a halogen-complex anion e.g. BF 4 -, AlCl 4 -, FeCl 4 -, SbCl 6 -, AnCl 6 -. In examples tetradecanol is reacted with ethylene oxide in the presence of diethoxy carbonium fluoroborate and/or triethyloxonium fluoroborate.
