Abstract
1,233,226. Making cans; seaming. AMERICAN CAN CO. 6 Sept., 1968 [8 Sept., 1967], No. 42421/68. Headings B3A and B3J. A machine for making the bodies of cans or like containers comprises a mandrel 10 for receiving and supporting partially formed onepiece cylindrical bodies B having overlapping longitudinal edges A, bumping means 29 and dwell means 44 for providing sustained engagement of the bumping means with the edges A with a substantially constant force to form the side seam of the can. The interface of the edges at A is coated with a heated thermoplastic adhesive which is cooled by passing a coolant, preferably brine, through ducts 122 and 124 in a spline 20 on mandrel 10 and in the hammer 78 of the bumping means 29 respectively. The dwell means comprises a piston 94 and cylinder 90 assembly interposed between the bumping means 29 and a crank 46. The piston is biased against collar 112 by a pressurized fluid, Fig. 3 (not shown). The mandrel has portions 16 which expand to hold the body against members 26 and the edges are held over each other by members 28. The hammer has two end portions 78 which gauge the ends of each longitudinal edge before bumping occurs. The dwell period may be adjusted by the insertion of shims 120 below the hammer slide 33 and the apparatus is adjusted for different diameter cans by using different sizes of collar 112.
