A fused electrolyte cell for producing Na and Cl has therein a cathode assembly including a hollow cylindrical, preferably circular, cathode 3 having affixed thereto a plurality of, e.g. a pair of diametrically opposed, cathode arms 6 extending laterally through the cell walls 1, 2 below the level of the fused salt, and an anode 4 disposed preferably concentrically within the cathode, each arm being sealed against leakage of fused salt by a seal comprising a flexible metal plate 8 mounted on the arm and at its outer edge 9 dished outwardly away from the cathode and sealed to the inner face of the metal sealing plate 10 sealed against the inner surface of the cell wall around the arm. The cathode and plates 8, 10 may be of steel. The spacing between the plates is preferably one half the differential expansion of the cathode assembly with respect to the cell wall for a rise to operating temperature to provide a flexible seal with a 'built-in' stop preventing unequal displacement between cathode and anode during heating. A screen diaphragm 5 may be positioned between the electrodes.
