Abstract

1381428 Liquid crystal cell ELECTROVAC FABRIKATION ELEKTROTECHNISCHER SPEZIALARTIKEL GmbH 21 June 1973 [4 July 1972 23 May 1973] 29565/73 Heading H4F In a cell comprising liquid crystal material disposed between two plates joined at their margins, the liquid crystal material is introduced into the cell via an opening which is subsequently closed to hermetically seal the cell, and at least one empty space is left within the cell to accommodate thermal expansion effects or small bubbles which may form in the liquid crystal material, e.g. if the cell is energized by electrodes on the inner plate surface. As described the plates are of glass and joined by a glass solder (or plastics or ceramic) rim which is broken at one or more places to provide the filling opening and optional venting openings. The empty space(s) may lie within at least one such opening, i.e. within the rim itself, the rim being relatively wide at such points, and the cross-section of the opening may be constant, or taper inwardly or outwardly of the cell. The opening may lie at the corner or side of a rectangular cross-section cell. Alternatively a finger may extend from the rim inwardly of the cell to define with the rim and/or a further finger the desired empty space. The latter may or may not connect with a venting and/or filling opening and may have a constant or tapering cross-section. The cell openings may be sealed by deposition of a stoved metal coat on to which is soldered a metal pad.
