Abstract

1,232,791. Fireproof bituminous felt. RUBEROID CO. Ltd. 12 March, 1969 [8 Feb., 1968; 14 Aug., 1968], Nos. 6300/68 and 38874/ 68. Heading DIP. A bituminous felt comprises a halogen donor, that is a compound containing chlorine or bromine that evolves chlorine, bromine, hydrogen chloride or hydrogen bromide on heating incorporated in one component of the bituminised felt (the fibrous felt component in the preferred embodiment), and a metal compound which reacts with the pyrolysis products of the halogen donor and thus enhances the fire retardant properties of the halogen donor incorporated in another component of the bituminised felt (one of the bitumen components in the preferred embodiment). Preferred halogen donors are either introduced separately as halogenated hydrocarbons, particularly alkyl benzenes containing at least two nuclear substituted halogens, halogenated paraffins, waxes and halogenated higher fatty acids or the felt can be made from halogenated polymers, particularly polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidine chloride, and vinyl chloride copolymers for example vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers. The metal compound is preferably an antimony compound, particularly antimony trioxide. If the fibrous felt is first impregnated with bitumen and then coated, two of the components may contain halogen donor (or metal compound) and the third component may contain metal compound (or halogen donor).
