Thermal insulating means comprises a layer of non-aqueous liquid 2 disposed between outer layers 1, 3, one outer layer 3 being permeable to water. In Fig. 1, fuel oil is disposed between wood planking 3 and a steel ship's hull 1 containing liquefied gas CL. In Fig. 2 (not shown), a layer (2a) of expanded plastics is also provided.
