Abstract

1,232,509. Blow-moulding; cooling. SIDEL. 3 Dec., 1969 [27 Dec., 1968], No. 59051/69. Heading B5A. In an extrusion-blow-moulding process, the article is cooled, particularly at the neck, during blowing by (i) blowing by compressed air at a predetermined pressure and (ii) venting the parison to the atmosphere, the steps (i) and (ii) being repeated. As shown in Fig. 1, an extruded parison 4 is enclosed in blow-mould halves 1 (and 2, Fig. 2, not shown) which close the parison bottom. A blowing head 5 is lowered by cylinder 10. Head 5 is connected by ducts 6, 7 and valve 8 to a source of compressed air 9, and by ducts 6a, 7a and valve 8a to a vacuum source, valves 8, 8a and cylinder 10 being controlled by a programme 15. After a first blowing stage, head 5 may be raised to vent the parison or valve 8 closed and valve 8a opened, the article being cooled by the stream of cold air. Head 5 is again lowered, or valve 8a closed and valve 8 opened, for a further blowing stage, which is followed again by the venting operation. Air trapped between the parison and the mould cavity may escape past the cavity edges into venting grooves 11, 12.
