Abstract

1,232,460. Grinding. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 June, 1968 [17 June, 1967], No. 28464/68. Heading B3D. A method of grinding plates of brittle material to a small thickness, such as 20 Ám, comprises adhering the plate 3 to a metal gauze 2 on a support 1, effecting grinding to a thickness determined by measuring the distance between the upper side of the plate and a fixed point on the support, and removing the plate from the support. The gauze may be brass mesh of 20 Ám thickness which is placed on the support 1. The plate 3, which may be of piezo-oxide, having a thickness of approximately 1 mm. is coated on one surface with cement 4 and placed with a slightly resilient layer 5 on the gauze. The assembly is heated and pressed by a die 6 to secure the plate to the support. Dust or contaminations in the cement are passed into the meshes of the gauze and do not cause breakage of the plate. After cooling, the support carrying the plate is removed for the grinding operation.
