Abstract

123,233. Goss Printing Press Co., (Goss Printing Press Co.). April 23, 1918. Rotary machines: driving printing-machines; damping-apparatus for lithographic machines; inking-apparatus; stopping, tripping, and like arrangements.-A rotary web printing-machine of the kind in which the feed of the web may be stopped while the remainder of the machine continues to run, is provided with a variable-speed mechanism for driving the forme cylinders and web-forwarding means at normal high speed and controlling means adapted to render the webforwarding means inoperative when the driving- means is shifted to low speed. The controlling means is adapted also to move the transfer cylinders in an offset press out of contact with the forme and impression cylinders simultaneously with the change to low speed. Means also are provided for throwing out of operation successively the ink supply to the ink-distributing mechanism, the transfer of ink to the forme cylinders, and the damping apparatus. Fig. 1 shows a rotary lithographic offset press printing a web 51 which is forwarded between a pair of transfer cylinders 15, 16 by forwarding rollers 57, 50 and the rollers of the folding mechanism 41. The variable-speed driving mechanism comprises a high-speed shaft 30, Figs. 1, 2, 3, and a lowspeed shaft 60 carrying loose gears 29, 59 adapted to be connected to their shafts by clutches 31, 61. The gear 59 meshes with a gear 58 fast to the gear 29, and the gear 29 meshes with a gear 27 driven by the motor 26. The shafts 30, 60 also carry loose intermeshing gears 25, 65 adapted to be driven from their shafts by ratchets 34, 67, Fig. 3, and pawls 33, 66 and the gear 25 drives the forme cylinders 11, 12 and transfer cylinders 15, 16 through intermediate gears 24, 23. The folding and web-forwarding rollers are driven from the shaft 30 by bevel gears 35, 36, shaft 37, and the gearing shown in Fig. 1. When the clutch 31 is closed, the shaft 30 and consequently the printing cylinders and web-forwarding means are driven at normal high speed, the shaft 60 being driven idly at low speed by gears 58, 59 and the gear 65 over-running the ratchet 67. When the clutch 31 is opened, the shaft 30 and webforwarding means is brought to rest, the gear 25 and printing cylinders being driven at low speed by the shaft 60. The clutch 31 is controlled by a hand-lever 68, Fig. 1, carrying a toothed sector 69 meshing with a gear 70 on a rotary cam member 71. A cam groove 72 in the member 71 operatively engages an arm 74 mounted on a shaft 75 and carrying a sector 76 meshing with a sector 77 connected by an arm 78 and link 79 to the operating lever 32 of the clutch 31. The transfer cylinders 15, 16 are carried in sliding bearings operated by toggles 21 connected for simultaneous movement by a link 22 and one of the toggles is secured to the shaft 75 so that when the handlever 68 is operated to throw in the low-speed gear, the transfer cylinders are simultaneously moved away from the forme cylinders 11, 12 and irom each other. The fountain rollers 88 of the inking-mechanisms are normally driven by pawl and ratchet gear 92, 93 from cams 87 through links 89 and arms 90. The pawls 92 may be moved clear of the ratchets to trip the ink-supply by means of swinging plates 94 operated by arms 95, linkage 96, 97, 99, and an arm 100 operatively engaging a cam groove 102 in the cam member 71.' The forme rollers 85 are carried by frames 84 pivoted on the shafts 83 of the distributing drums 81 and adapted to be turned to move the rollers 85 out of contact with the forme cylinders by means of eccentrics 106 on shafts 104 carrying gears 103 meshing with quadrants 107 connected by links 108 and operated by an arm 107<a>, link 109, and bell-crank 110 engaging a cam groove 112 in the member 71. The damping rollers 114 are mounted in swinging frames 113 connected together by a link 117 and operated to trip the damping mechanism by a link 118 and lever 119 engaging a cam groove 121 in the member 71. The cam grooves 72, 102, 112, and 121 are so arranged that the tripping of the transfer cylinders, ink-supply, forme inking-rollers and damping-apparatus takes place in the order named by successive portions of the movement of the hand-lever 68 to the left. By this arrangement, a properly inked condition of the forme cylinders may be obtained while the machinery is running at low-speed and the web stationary.
