Abstract
1,232,097. Subaqueous tanks. J. H. POMEROY & CO. Inc. 14 Aug., 1968, No. 38908/68. Heading E1H. A reinforced-concrete tank for a liquid that floats on water without mingling therewith includes primary chambers 36, 37, 38 formed by bulkheads 33, 34 within a united pair of cylindrcal-shells 21, 22, chambers 43, 44 formed by flat walls 41, 42 being provided to facilitate distribution of incoming liquid and water, respectively, to the primary chambers by way of inclined ducts 51, 58. The liquid may be oil and lies on top of the water within the primary chambers, the pressure of the water being substantially equal to that of the ambient water. The chambers 43, 44 and ducts 51, 58 render disturbance of the oil and water interface in each primary chamber minimal. The tank lies horizontally on subaqueous ground and may be one of a group of such tanks, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), which have their chambers 43 connected by pipes or lines 71; 72 to an oil-pumping station (12) resting upon said ground and extending above the free-surface of the ambient water. The water enters, or leaves each end of the chamber 44 by way of a pipe 76. Silt, or the like, collected in the lower parts of the tank can be flushed away through a gate 64 at each end of the chamber 44 by water issuing from holes 62 in a pipe 61 extending along the bottom of each primary chamber. Access to the primary chambers is provided by manholes 67. Gases can escape through ducts 59.
