Feeding sheets.-In the manufacture of paper tubes such as are used for the bodies of containers for jam or other foods, a sheet of paper is taken from a pile the support for which is automatically adjusted to maintain the topmost sheet at a predetermined level. The sheet may pass between printing rollers on its way to the mandrel. The sheets 5 are piled on a carriage 2 which is wheeled into place. Flexible cables 6<a>, secured at one end to the frame of the machine, pass under pulleys 4 on the carriage and are secured to chains passing over sprocket wheels 13. A weight 9<a> is hung on the end of the chain. The sprocket 13 is moved round step-by-step automatically by means of a ratchet wheel and pawl mechanism 14. The pawl 14 is oscillated during the running of the machine. Means, not shown, controlled by a roller resting on the topmost sheet. are provided to raise the pawl out of engagement and allow it to oscillate idly when the sheet is at the required height. The sheets are fed between rollers 35, 37 to travelling carriers by a rubbercovered roller 29 reciprocated by cam mechanism, and provided with a detent which allows the roller to roll over the sheet during the backward movement, but prevents rotation and so feeds the sheet to the rollers 35, 37 during the forward movement. On its way to the mandrel the sheet may receive any desired printed matter by passage between rollers 41, 42.
