Abstract
1,231,173. Photo-electric particle analysers. E.M.I. Ltd. July 22, 1968, [April 20, 1967], No.18163/67. Heading G1A, [Also in Division G4| Photo-electric apparatus is used for detecting abnormal cells or distributions of cells in biological samples. In the arrangement shown, a transparent plastics tape 1 carrying an elongated sample comprising a succession of cells, is passed on rollers 2, 3, through the photo-electric system. Transverse scanning of the sample is provided by a rotating disc 10 provided with a number of slits. After passing through the tape the light not obscured by a cell reaches a photo-cell, photomultiplier or photo-transistor 7 via transverse slit 8. The speed of rotation of disc 10 is arranged to allow successive scans across the sample to just overlap. If desired, however, successive scans may overlap half the width of adjacent scans, raising the probability of detecting larger (abnormal) cells. The output of detector 7 is of pulse form the characteristics of the pulse i.e. amplitude and duration giving information as to the diameter of the cell being scanned. The pulse is analysed in a signal processing unit 13 which passes a pulse to one of three (or more) counters 14-16, depending on the size of the pulse. At the end of the investigation of the whole length of the sample, a distribution detector 18 determines if the counts accumulated in counters 14-16 represent a distribution of cell sizes equivalent to a normal or an abnormal distribution of the latter, an indication device 20 is actuated and a marker 21 operated to mark the tape. During the investigation of the sample, if a cell of diameter outside the range of the counters is detected, the marker and indicator are also actuated, the mark being placed next to the abnormal cell. A marked sample may be examined later by a cytologist. Instead of the use of a strip-like sample, one carried on a normal glass slide may be used and this be scanned in a raster using a flying spot scanner. The sample may be a cervical smear, tissue section, blood or urine sample etc.
