A retarder composition for cement, lime and other hydraulic binders comprises (i) at least one fluidizer retarder selected from sugars, lignosulphonates, tannins, polyphosphates and chlorates, and (ii) at least one thickener retarder selected from organic colloids and powders of mineral and similar colloids, the percentage by weight of the fluidizer being greater than that of the thickener. There are preferably at least four retarder constituents, each in an amount 5-40% by wt. of the composition. The composition may be added in an amount 0À2-1À2% by wt. to the hydraulic binder, e.g. Portland, blast-furnace, slag, iron, magnesite, puzzolan and aluminous cements, Cement Fondu, or lime. In examples, retarder mixtures as follows are used: (1) sodium hexametaphosphate, chestnut tannin, and ammonium lignosulphonate (fluidizing); carboxymethyl cellulose (C.M.C.), starch, and kieselguhr (plasticizing); (2) sodium pyrophosphate and sodium chlorate (fluidizing); sodium alginate and chalk powder (plasticizing); (3) saccharose, sodium lignosulphonate and sodium pyrophosphate (fluidizing); sodium alginate, C.M.C. and water (plasticizing).
