Abstract
1,230,297. Isobutylene copolymer compositions; phenolic resins. PROTECTIVE TREATMENTS Inc. 29 July, 1969 [12 Aug., 1968], No. 38005/69. Headings C3P and C3R. Viscous, non-stringy caulking and sealing compositions comprise (1) an elastomeric copolymer of isobutylene and a divinyl aromatic compound, (2) <SP>1</SP>/ 5 to 4 parts by weight per part of copolymer of a low volatility plasticizer and (3) a volatile compatible solvent, the composition on aging for two weeks at 190‹ F. having a Shore A durometer hardness of 10 to 40 and exhibiting at least 100% elongation. The elastomeric copolymer, which may be partially cross-linked, may be derived from divinyl benzenes, toluenes, naphthalenes and xylenes and naphthalene analogues thereof, diisopropenyl benzene and halogen substitution products thereof, optionally with 0.1 1 to 30 weight per cent of a C 4-14 multiolefin, e.g. isoprene, butadiene, piperylene or dimethylbutadiene. The plasticizer may be a processing oil, chlorinated polyphenyl, dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, or liquid polybutene or polypropylene. The volatile solvent may be a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon. The compositions may also contain tackifiers, e.g. phenolic resins and modified rosins; polyolefins; drying oils; fusible resins; pigments and fillers. Examples describe compositions comprising isobutylene/ divinyl benzene/isoprene copolymer polybutenes and talc together with (I) ethylene / vinyl acetate copolymer, polyethylene, silica, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide and xylene; (II) hydrogenated wood rosin, phenol / formaldehyde resins, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyethylene, carbon black and xylene; (III) hydrogenated wood rosin, phenol/formaldehyde resins, ethylene / vinyl acetate copolymer, polyethylene, asbestos, calcium carbonate, carbon black and naphtha, (IV) hydrogenated wood rosin, phenol / formaldehyde resins, ethylene / vinyl acetate copolymer, polyethylene, asbestos, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide and xylene; and (V) dicumyl peroxide, hydrogenated wood rosin, asbestos, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, carbon black and xylene.
