Abstract

1,230,067. Shrink packaging. W. R. GRACE & CO. 2 Oct., 1969 [23 Dec., 1968], No. 48597/69. Heading B8C. A package comprises an article, e.g. a tray 3 carrying cylindrical objects 2 and a sleeve 1 of packaging material tightly gripping the lateral surfaces and ends of the article, the sleeve having an opening 10 at both ends of the article and an overlapped seam in the sleeve, the seam being sealed only along its portion which is adjacent a lateral surface of the article, e.g. the bottom of the tray. The sleeve is formed as a tube of a heat sealable film with end portions of the tube extending beyond the article, the overlapping edges of the film forming a seam which is heat sealed only along that portion which is adjacent the surface of the article and the tube then being shrunk around the article. The article may be positioned in the tube after the latter has been formed. The seam is sealed by means of a heated bar, a hot wire or ribbon or by causing the package to pass over a heated belt or roller.
