Lubricants comprise an oil and a minor amount of a quaternary ammonium salt of formula where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are C 1-20 hydrocarbyl and either A and B are each R<SP>5</SP> or one of A and B is R<SP>5</SP> and the other is R<SP>6</SP>O, where R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are C 1 -C 25 hydrocarbyl. The oil may be mineral or synthetic, e.g. C 5 -C 9 mono-carboxylic acid/pentaerythritol esters. The composition may also contain sebacic acid, dioctyl diphenylamine, phenothiazine, silicones, and benzotriazols.
