Abstract
1,229,764. Valves. F. W. SCHWING. 27 Jan., 1970 [5 Feb., 1969], No. 3835/70. Heading F2V. A control valve, which is suitable for use in conjunction with a concrete-conveying pump, comprises a closure member 2 having oppositely directed projections 19 within which are fixedly received valve operating shafts 4, a housing within which the valve member moves and which is formed from two abutting and identical bearing plates 20 terminated at each end by twopart stop plates 23, the bearing and stop plates together defining two ports 3 each of which registers with one duct leading from the pump, and a pair of piston and cylinder valve actuators 6. Each operating shaft 4 has secured to its end a piston 12 with such piston co-operating with a cylinder 13 secured by a nut 16 to the valve housing, the nut 16 also serving to adjust a packing 5 surrounding each shaft 4. Covering each shaft 4 and extending between its piston 12 and the valve member projection 19 is an erosion tube 10 the outer diameter of which is smaller than the inner diameter of the cylinder 13 such that an intermediate space 7 is formed therebetween, the space communicating via a line 8 with a tank 9 containing flushing liquid. In operation, a multi-way valve 25 determines the direction of movement of the operating shafts 4 and hence of the valve member 2. In consequence, if piston 12 moves in the direction of arrow a, flushing liquid is drawn into the space 7 and so cleans the portion of the shaft within such space. On the return stroke, with motion in the direction of arrow b, the flushing fluid and impurities entrained therein are returned to the tank 9 where such impurities settle, the tank 9 being made at least in part of transparent material to so facilitate viewing of the accumulation of impurities. In modifications (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), the valve member may be carried by one shaft only, or alternatively, two valve members may be arranged in series in the longitudinal direction of one valve actuating rod.
