Abstract

1,229,538. Magnetic recording medium. FILMFABRIK WOLFEN VEB. 11 July, 1969, No. 35077/69. Heading H1H. A magnetic recording medium comprises a substrate at least partially coated with a mixture of magnetically active particles and a polyvinyl formal binder. The medium is made by coating the substrate with a mixture of the active particles, a binder and a solvent, the solvent then being removed. The coating preparation may be subjected to shearing forces, e.g. by grinding in a ball mill, before application to the substrate. The coated substrate may be smoothed by hot pressing. The polyvinyl formal may contain hydroxyl and acetate groups, and its weight ratio to the magnetically active particles may be 1 : 2 to 1 : 7. Specified active substances are γ-Fe 2 O 3 , Ve 3 O 4 , CrO 2 , metals and ferrites. Specified substrates, e.g. thin flexible films, are polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose triacetate, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide and polyimide.
