Abstract

1,229,526. Treating paper. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 11 Nov., 1969 [5 Dec., 1968], No. 55212/69. Headings DIP and D2B. [Also in Division D2] Paper is brightened and its opacity is increased by treating the pulp from which it is formed with zinc metatitanates and an optical brightening agent. The concentration of metatitanate, preferably having a particle size distribution between 0.05 and 3 microns, is selected so that the treated paper contains from 2 to 20% by weight based on the weight of the dry pulp. Preferable brightening agents are tetrasodium 4, 4'-bis [ [4-(2-hydroxyethylamino)-6-[m (and p)-sulphoanilino]-s-triazine-2-yl] amino]-2, 2'-stilbenedisulphonate and disodium 4, 4'-bis[ [4-anilino-6-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl) amino]-S-triazine-2-yl] amino]-2, 2'-stilbenedisulphonate. Conventional paper modifiers such as binders, bleaches, extender pigments, alum and rosin may be included in the composition during paper formation.
