Abstract
1,229,512. Grinding. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 31 July, 1969 [9 Aug., 1968], No. 38391/69. Heading B3D. An abrasive grinding tool comprises a working surface of diamonds embedded in a heat conductive matrix, a porous, heat-dissipating region below the working surface, consisting of material of thermal conductivity at least 0À05 cal./sec./cm.<SP>2</SP>/<SP>0</SP> C./cm., having macro-sized coolant flow passages, and means for supporting the heat-dissipating region. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, pleated metal ribbons 4a-4c are bonded, e.g. by brazing, between side-plates (6), Fig. 1 (not shown), coolant, e.g. water, being introduced through holes 8. The working surface 12 is formed by electrodeposition of a metal, e.g. nickel, matrix containing diamonds, and a hub 10 is provided. Alternatively, Fig. 4, a series of corrugated wire mesh screens 16 may be, e.g., brazed together, the central portion of the so-formed wheel being reinforced by impregnation with a thermosetting liquid 22. Further, Fig. 7, layers of perforated sheets 28 separated by possibly integral spacers 34 may be employed. Also, Fig. 9 (not shown), a porous metal, e.g. nickel, structure (40) may be used, and the working surface may be formed on the circular face of the wheel, Fig. 10 (not shown), e.g. for polishing. Radial bores (68), Fig. 11 (not shown), may be formed in the porous structure.
