Abstract
1,229,273. Automatic analysis. SCIENTIFIC INDUSTRIES Inc. 28 Oct., 1968 [12 Aug., 1968], No. 50948/68. Heading B1X. Apparatus for dispensing liquid samples comprises sample receptacles 12, 12a which may be mounted on rotatable ring 18, strip of material 60 having sample receiving locations 68 spaced along it, means for advancing strip 60 lengthwise to position each location 68 at a sampling station, shifting means 90 for shifting the strip in a direction transverse to its direction of travel to a position where sample can be discharged, optionally by means of air blown through tube 104, on to a location 68 from the receptacle 12a at the sampling position, the shifting means then retracting the strip. Timing and coordinating device 40 controls rotation of ring 18 by motor 34, movement of strip 60, shifting means 90 and air blower 100, and receives signals from photocell devices 44-48, 46-50, to detect an oncoming sample receptacle 12a and provide for slowing then stopping motor 34, and from photocell devices 78-82, 86-88 to detect sample receiving locations 68 and hence provide for slowing and stopping strip 60 with a location 68 at the sampling station. In the automatic analysis apparatus of Fig. 3 (not shown) samples discharged from receptacles (12a) on to absorbent pads (68) on tape (60) are forced through porous tape (112) on to analysis tape (118), which may carry reagent, as the three tapes are pressed together by rollers (126) and drum (128). The tapes are then separated and the analysis tape (118) is treated in zone (132), for example by washing, heating and drying then passes to optical reading device (134).
