Abstract

1,228,990. Image pick-up tubes. FERNSEH G.m.b.H. 29 July, 1968 [27 July, 1967; 14 March, 1968], No. 36047/68. Heading H1D. In an image-orthicon tube having a very small separation between the photocathode 3 and the storage target 4 such that the image magnification is 1 : 1, the storage target has a storage layer of porous secondary emission conductivity (SEC) material and a high voltage applied between the photo-cathode and the storage target in order to obtain penetration of the photo-electrons into the storage layer. The SEC layer with an intervening aluminium layer, or with intervening aluminium and aluminium oxide layers, is supported by a metal mesh in order to withstand the high electrostatic forces. The separation D between target and photocathode is such that the radius r of the circle of confusion at the target, given by the equation r = 2 D Uo/U where Uo is the initial velocity of the photo-electrons expressed in volts and U the voltage between target and photo-cathode, is equal to the width of one picture point of the television image. The SEC layer may consist of potassium chloride or magnesium oxide and the supporting mesh of copper, tungsten or nickel. The intervening material may comprise an aluminium layer 10 Š thick deposited on an aluminium oxide layer 100 Š thick. The aluminium oxide layer may be omitted, an aluminium layer being provided on the mesh, previously provided with a gold layer, with the aid of a collodion layer. The organic layer is then evaporated and the aluminium united with the mesh at a temperature of 400-500‹ C., the gold acting as a solder. The aluminium layer may be 50-400 Š thick. The dimensions of the supporting mesh are also given. The storage target 4 and first and second field mesh electrodes 5, 6 are all supported from the cylinder 2 with the provision of ceramic insulators 22, 23. Contact springs 10a, 25, 24 connect the electrodes to the ring seal terminals 30, 29, 28 respectively. The whole assembly is secured in position by the end of contact spring 10a which is formed to grip the inner end of seal 30. A wall coating 27a connected to a further ring seal 27 prevents the passage of leakage current from the photocathode or its ring seal terminal 26 to the seal 28. The side of the photo-cathode adjacent the target may be provided with a non-reflective dark layer, e.g. sputtered aluminium, to avoid optical halves.
