Abstract
1,228,965. Drilling. HUGHES TOOL CO. 5 July, 1968, No. 32287/68. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F2] A drill bit comprises a cutter element rotatably mounted on a shaft, with a resilient packing ring being compressed between the element and shaft such that its thickness is not more than substantially 90% of its thickness prior to assembly of the element upon the shaft. The ring, which may be of circular, oval or square cross-section, has preferably a durometer hardness of less than 70 (Shore A) to minimise wear and may be positioned in a groove in the shaft or element. The ring may lie in a clearance groove of lesser depth but of wider extent. In one embodiment the ring is composed of an inner ring of rubber and an outer ring of tetrafluoroethylene resin. Lubricant may be fed to the bearings between the element and shaft from a reservoir which maintains the pressure of the lubricant substantially the same as the pressure of the drilling fluid.
