[Also in Division F2] In a lubricating system for a roller bit comprising a lubricant reservoir 25 having a member- 31 moved by the ambient drilling fluid pressure to force lubricant to a sealed bearing space 17 in the roller 7, a non-return valve 35 exhausts overpressure in the lubricant system to the. outside of the bit. The exit orifice of the valve 35 and the vent 29. may be widely separated, and may be located in the crotch portion or the shoulder portion of the bit. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the lubricant reservoir and valve 35 are in a sub above the bit. The member 31 shown as a flexible diaphragm, may be replaced by a piston.
