In apparatus for compressing windings 9 e.g. for transformers, the weight of the winding effects the compression by acting on an arm 2 one end of which slidingly engages a supporting surface 8 at an acute angle α, the other end of the arm 2 being operatively connected with an upwardly extending rod 5 which transmits the compressive force to the upper part of the winding 9. As shown, the rod 5 is connected to two arms 2 through toothed segments 3 meshing with with racks 6. The arms 2 carry rollers 4 and are adjustable telescopically. An hydraulic cylinder 14 and piston 16 may be used to raise the winding on a table 17 in the first place.
