Abstract

1,228,637. Inspecting and cutting glass sheet. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. Sept. 6, 1968 [Sept. 8, 1967], No. 42630/68. Heading G1A. In an arrangement for inspecting a glass sheet to determine the disposition of fault free sections and controlling according sequence of operations for example cutting or marking the sheet, successive sections of predetermined dimensions are scanned for faults starting from the front edge, coded information corresponding to the position and number of fault free sections is stored, scanning is interrupted when a fault is detected and started again from the position of the fault, the scanning is continued until the next fault or the rear end of the sheet is reached when the number of fault free sections in this continued scan is also stored, the glass is cut or marked in the area preceding the first fault starting from the front edge and in the area beyond the fault the successive sections are cut using the rear edge or the next fault as a datum from which the sections to be cut or marked are measured forward. The arrangement enables the bringing together in the vicinity of the first fault the two off-cuts from the two areas. The scanning may detect the actual faults by means of the deflection or variation in intensity of a rotating beam of light, or it may detect marks, for example metallic marks, made on the glass during a preceding inspection. The information in respect of the faults may be on a tape running synchronously with the glass or on the glass itself. The tape may be magnetic or perforated. In checking for cutting windscreen areas a timplet may be moved past a second inspecting arrangement synchronously with the sheet so that only faults in portinent areas are recorded. A code of perforations positioned transversely across a tape is exemplified, and contact feelers adjustably spaced along the tape in different transverse positions are provided for controlling the cutting.
