Abstract

1,228,495. Methylene-bridged polyarylamines. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 Nov., 1969 [25 Nov., 1968; 30 Sept., 1969], Nos. 55803/68 and 48066/69. Heading C2C. A process for the manufacture of methylenebridged polyarylamines by the condensation of primary arylamines and formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst is characterized in that the initial mixing of the main reactants formaldehyde and primary arylamine is carried out by feeding formaldehyde, primary arylamine and catalyst simultaneously in predetermined proportions into a mixing vessel through which a stream of partially reacted formaldehyde, arylamine and catalyst is being continuously recycled from a first reactor fed from the mixing vessel, and that a predetermined proportion of material from the first reactor is continuously fed to a further reactor or reactors for completion of the condensation. The molar proportion of arylamine to formaldehyde is preferably from 1- 5 :1 to 4 : 1; the temperature of the mixing vessel is suitably from 20‹ C. to 75‹ C. and that of the first reactor from 40‹ C. to 80‹ C. Suitable arylamines include aniline and ortho and meta C 1 , C 3 , C 4 and C 8 -alkyl anilines, ortho and meta-anisidines and -phenetidines, 1- naphthylamine, 1,5-naphthylene diamine, 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diamines, o- and m-phenylene diamines, o- and m-chloro-, -bromo- and -nitro-anilines &c. Suitable catalysts are strong acids, strong Lewis acids, weak acids, acid salts, neutral salts and carbon dioxide. In examples 2,41- and 4,41-diaminodiphenyl methane and higher polyamines based thereon are prepared.
