1,228,237. Catalysed oxygen consumption in molten electrolyte fuel cells. BOLT BERANEK & NEWMAN Inc. 11 June, 1968 [9 Aug., 1967 (2); 20 March, 1968], No. 27752/68. Heading H1B. In an electric cell wherein continual peroxide or superoxide formation is effected during operation of the cell by supply of oxygen, with agitation, to a fused electrolyte in the cathode region of the cell, the peroxide or superoxide formation is catalysed by addition to the electrolyte of a compound of a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table or of Mn, or of a boron compound giving rise to a borate or perborate. In examples cells using a Pd hydrogen anode and a Ni cathode in a 90/10 mixture of KOH/Na- OH at 460-500‹ C., improved oxygen utilization and power density, together with reduced deposition of Ni at the anode and Ni 2 O 3 at the oxygen inlets, were obtained by adding CO 2 O 3 , MuO 2 or Fe 2 O 3 or Co(NO 3 ) 2 .6H 2 O; and improved power density and dependence thereof on O 2 partial pressure were obtained by addition of K 2 B 2 O 7 , H 3 BO 3 or Na 3 BO 3 .
