1411911 KOH electrolyte with silicate ion SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 3 Jan 1974 [19 Jan 1973 6 June 1973] 2904/73 and 27030/72 Heading H1B Passivation of the zinc electrode of a cell is avoided by employing an aqueous alkaline electrolyte containing 2À00 to 4À75 mol. litre<SP>-1</SP> of potassium hydroxide and 9-36 gram ions litre<SP>-1</SP> of silicate ions. The silicate ions may be provided by the addition of potassium silicate. The zinc may be in powder form as a slurry in the electrolyte which is circulated. The cell may be of the primary, secondary zinc-air, or fuel-cell type.
