Abstract

1,228,058. Hydraulic intensifiers. J. NEMETZ. Nov.25, 1968, No.55856/68. Heading F1P. A cylinder 2 is fed with pneumatic pressure at 17 acting on a differential piston 4 to give a higher hydraulic pressure acting on a second piston 13, whose stroke comprises low-pressure travel (both pistons moving together) and high-pressure travel, the changeover taking place as load is applied to the piston 13 by involving frictional grip on the interior of the cylinder (e.g. by conical wedges 6, 8 forcing outwardly a ring 7 due to the high hydraulic pressure). In the form shown application of pneumatic pressure acting on the piston 4 initially causes two sleeves 2a and 2b to slide with all the other moving parts until the piston 13 meets a resistance whereon intensified hydraulic pressure acting in the chambers 21 inter-connected at 23 forces the wedges 6, 8 together expanding the ring 7 to frictionally lock the sleeves in the cylinder. The minimum load at which intensification takes place is controlled by the setting of a valve 11. In another embodiment, Fig.3, (not shown) the frictional grip is provided by expanding a plastics sleeve (31) into annular grooves (33) on the inside of the cylinder.
