Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Fibres or filaments are prepared from aromatic polyesters which consist essentially of the unit where Ar, is para-phenylene which may bear one or more halogen or C 1-6 alkyl groups, Ar 2 is (1) meta-phenylene, (2) mixtures of metaphenylene with up to 90% para-phenylene as in Ar 1 , or (3) and Z is where R and R<SP>1</SP> are the same or different and represent perfluoro- or perfluorochloro-C 1-6 alkyl, with the provision that R<SP>1</SP> may be H when R is perfluorinated alkyl, or where R and R<SP>1</SP> may together form a perfluorinated cyclic hydrocarbon group of at most 6 carbon atoms. The fibres may be prepared by wet or dry spinning from solutions containing 15-30% by weight of polymer dissolved in tetrahydrofuran, methyl ethyl ketone, chloroform, cyclohexanone or a mixture of 4% 1,1,2-trichloroethane and 96% tetrahydrofuran. The solution viscosity may be 10-500 poises. 25% poly[(hexafluoroisopropylidene) di - p - phenylene isophthalate] in T.H.F. may be wet spun, dry spun or meltspun to form filaments, the product being extracted with an acetone/water mixture (equal volumes) to remove residual solvent. Examples are given in which various polymers are drawn 1À6-2À85 X at 25-215‹ C. by hot pin drawing or cold drawing.
