Abstract
1,227,805. Automatic circuit breakers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 6 Aug., 1968 [21 Sept., 1967], No. 37388/68. Heading H1N. A small width moulded case circuit breaker for panelboard mounting has a pivoted handle 32 having a portion 68 extending below the pivot; a pivoted releasably latched trip lever 50 lying to one side of the portion 68; and a contact lever 26 having an upper portion lying along and pivoted to the other side of the portion 68, a tension spring 46 extending between the trip-lever 50 and a cranked middle portion of contact lever 26. The moulded casing is divided internally by rigs into three compartments housing respectively the contacts 22, 24 and arc chute 140; the handle and trip lever 50; and latching and releasing mechanism 112. Both the lower end of contact lever 26 and the end of trip lever 50 move in slots between the ribs. The contact lever 26 is pivoted to handle 32 by a tapered projection 28 which is biased by the spring 46 to be retained in the handle; a rib 45 guides the lower end of contact lever 26 maintaining correct alignment. The tripping mechanism comprises a magnetic member 112 pivoted in an aperture 98 and an armature latch 90 pivoted to the member 112; a bimetal strip passes through the member 112. When the bimetal drives member 112 to the right releasing the latch through a coupling 118 or when member 112 attracts the latch directly, the trip lever 50 is released and turns clockwise about its pivot 76 moving the spring 46 overcentre to release the contacts. The handle is arrested in an intermediate position by a lug 84 on lever 50 and the breaker is reset by moving the handle to off. In the event of contact welding another lug 86 strikes the contact lever 26 to assist opening. In pivoting the trip lever strikes a common trip lever 158 which can be coupled with other breakers, by a bar inserted in slots 166, to trip them simultaneously. In a modification (Figs. 8, 9, not shown), the ribs 45, 47 are replaced by a separate slotted insulating shield.
