Abstract
1,227,474. Glycol diesters of polycarboxylic acids. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 11 Dec., 1968 [8 Jan., 1968], No. 58896/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Glycol diesters of polycarboxylic acids are made by ester interchange between an alkyl ester of a polycarboxylic acid, and a glycol, said ester interchange being carried out in the presence of a catalytic amount of (a) an organic amine compound of ametal of Formula (I) or (II) where M is a metal in any of Groups I to VIII of the Periodic Table, R is an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, alicyclic, alkoxy or an aryloxy group; R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl groups of up to 20 carbon atoms, or aryl, aralkyl alkaryl or alicyclic groups; v is the valence of the metal; x is a co-ordination number of the metal and y is an integer from 1 to (v - 1) or a catalytic amount of (b) a heterocyclic nitrogen compound of a metal wherein the heterocycle contains only N, C and H atoms; and in which in both (a) and (b) above the nitrogen is linked to the metal by a valence bond, neither of (a) or (b) being ionic salts. Preferred metals are Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Zn, Cd, Nd, Sm, Ti, Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb, Bi, W, Mn, and Co. In the examples diesters are made from ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, in the presence of some of the above catalysts-mixtures may be used-and these esters are used to make polyesters.
