Abstract

1,227,448. Reverse osmosis; desalination of water. AMERICAN STANDARD Inc. 5 June, 1968, No. 26724/68. Heading B1X. Salt water is desalinated by passing it under pressure through a chamber defined by a tubular semipermeable membrane 10 supported on a porous member 12, the chamber being provided with spheres 22 which move freely in all directions adjacent the inner surface of membrane 10 and thereby reduce polarization effects. The salt water is pumped into the chamber through tube 16, and leaves through tube 18. Desalinated water passes by reverse osmosis through the membrane 10 and porous member 12, and forms drops 20 on the outside of member 12. The desalinated water drips into a collector. The motion of the spheres may be promoted by causing pulsating flow of the salt water. An elastomeric disc 24 at each end of the chamber amplifies the axial oscillation of the spheres. The spheres, which may be solid or hollow, may be made of glass or polyethylene.
