Abstract

1,227,446. Polyimides from polyisocyanates. SOC. RHODIACETA. 22 May, 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 24542/68. Addition to 1,105,437. Heading C3R. A polyimide comprises divalent organic radicals R containing at least 2 carbon atoms and n-valent radicals R<SP>11</SP> containing at least n carbon atoms where n is greater than 1 each comprising at least 2 organic groups linked by a group of formula where Y and Y<SP>1</SP> are alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl, the radicals R and R<SP>11</SP> being linked by groups of formula in which R<SP>1</SP> is organic and the chain is terminated by -NCO groups or groups of formula Radical R may contain the following groupings: where X is alkylene, dioxyalkylene, cycloaliphatic or arylene and Y and Y<SP>1</SP> are alkyl, aryl or cycloaliphatic. The polyimide may also contain n<SP>1</SP> - valent organic radicals R<SP>111</SP> which contain at least n<SP>1</SP> carbon atoms where n<SP>1</SP> is greater than 2. These radicals may contain the following groupings: The polyimide may be of M.W. 1000-10,000. It may be prepared in solution from the corresponding polyisocyanate(s) and tetracarboxylic acid or the dianhydride thereof. The reaction temperature may be 40-350‹ C. Solvents specified are DMA, DMF, DMSO and NMP. Polyisocyanates specified include 4,4<SP>1</SP>- triphenylphosphate di - isocyanate, 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- triphenylthiophosphate di-isocyanate, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-triphenylthiophosphine di-isocyanate, bis(4 - isocyanatophenyl) benzene thiophosphonate, bis(4 - isocyanatophenyl)benzenephosphonate, 4,4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>11</SP> - triphenylthiophosphate tri-isocyanate, 4,4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>11</SP> - triphenylphosphine phosphine oxide tri-isocyanate, 4,4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>11</SP> - triphenylphosphonate tri-isocyanate, 4,4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>11 </SP>- triphenylthiophosphate tri - isocyanate, 4,4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>11 </SP>- triphenylmethane tri - isocyanate, 2,4,4<SP>1</SP>- diphenylether triisocyanate, 4,4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>11</SP> - triphenylphosphate triisocyanate, 4 - methyl - 2,4,6 - tri - isocyanatobenzene, 1,3,5 - trimethyl - 2,4,6 - tri - isocyanatobenzene, 1,3,7 - naphthalene tri - isocyanate, 2,4,4<SP>1</SP>- diphenyl tri - isocyanate, 3- methyl - 2,4,4<SP>1</SP>- diphenylmethane, tri - isocyanate 4,4<SP>1</SP>- dimethyl - 2,2<SP>1</SP>,5,5<SP>1</SP> - diphenylmethane tetraisocyanate, polyphenylene polymethylene polyisocyanate and polyoxyphenylene polyisocyanate. The acid may be pyromellitic acid dianhydride.
