Process for manufacturing polyamides The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing polyamides according to the claim of the main patent, the content of which is as follows: reacting, in the molar ratio 1:
1, in the presence of an inert polar organic solvent, at least one diisocyanate corresponding to the general formula O = C = NRN = C = O in which R represents a divalent radical comprising at least two carbon atoms and being a aliphatic aromatic or alicyclic residue, or a heterocyclic residue containing at least one nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur atom in the ring or several of these residues linked directly or by at least one of the following radicals:
EMI0001.0006
where X is a divalent alkylene, dioxyalkylene, cyclanylidene or arylene radical, Y and Y 'being alkyl, aryl or cyclanyl radicals, with at least one carbonyl compound capable of providing an internal diimide, containing two pairs of carbonyl groups, each of these groups being linked, on the one hand, to a carbon atom of the same tetravalent radical, and, on the other hand, to an oxygen atom, the carbonyl groups belonging to the same pair being separated by three atoms of carbon to the maximum.
The linear polyamides obtained according to this process have excellent mechanical and thermal properties but they do not have sufficient resistance against attack by certain chemicals, in particular acids and alkali hydroxides, to allow their use in certain applications. .
The process according to the present invention makes it possible to obtain polyamides which exhibit improved properties, both with regard to mechanical and thermal properties and resistance to chemical attack, compared with those of linear polyamides produced according to the method. process covered by the main patent.
It is characterized by the fact that one adds to the diisocyanate and to the carbonyl compound, either before the reaction or during the latter, a mixture comprising the same carbonyl compound and at least one polyisocyanate of general formula R "( -N = C = O) n in which n is an integer at least equal to 2, R "being an n-valent radical comprising at least n carbon atoms and comprising at least 2 of the following residues:
aliphatic, aromatic, alicyclic, heterocyclic residues containing at least one nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur atom in the ring, these residues possibly being the same or different and being linked by at least one of the following linking radicals
EMI0001.0015
EMI0002.0000
the amounts of the components of these mixtures being such that there is, in the reaction mixture, half a mole of carbonyl compound for each isocyanate group.
Thus the polyamides obtained according to this process, which can be linear or crosslinked depending on whether polyisocyanates in which n is two or greater than two are used, contain, as linking radicals in their molecule, phosphorus, thiophosphorus or silicate groups of which the presence gives them particularly good thermal and chemical stability.
As polyisocyanates which will be added as a mixture with the carbonyl compound, use will in particular be made of diisocyanates, in particular the following diisocyanato-4,4′-triphenylphosphate, diisocyanato-4,4′-triphenylthiophosphate, sulfide de diisocyanato-4,4 ′ , triphenylphosphine, diisocyanato-4,4'-triphenylphosphonate, diisocyanato-4,4'-triphenylthiophosphonate, diisocyanato-4,4'-tetraphénylsilicate, and triisocyanates, in particular triisocyanato-4,4 ', 4 "-triphénylthiosphate, triisocyanato-4,4 ', 4 "-triphenylphosphine, triisocyanato-4,4'4" -triphenylthiophosphonate.
The carbonyl compounds which are used are those described in the main patent, namely tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides, tetracarboxylic acids or a mixture of a dianhydride and an acid corresponding respectively to the general formulas

in which R 'represents a tetravalent radical comprising at least two carbon atoms and being a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic residue, or a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic residue, or a substituted or unsubstituted cycloaliphatic residue or a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic residue, containing at least one nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur atom in the ring,
or more of these residues linked directly or by at least one of the following radicals -SO2-; -0-; -CO-; I O = P-Y; Y-C-Y '; -NY-CO-X-CO-NY-; 11 -CO-NY-X-NY-CO-; -CO-O-X-O-CO-; -O-CO-X-CO-O- and -CO-NY-NY-CO- where X is a divalent alkylene, dioxyalkylene, cyclanylidene or arylene radical and Y and Y 'have the same meaning as above. The reaction is carried out in the presence of an inert polar organic solvent, at a temperature between 40 and 350 ° C., and variable according to the starting products used and the molecular weight which is desired to be obtained.
The starting substances are dissolved in the inert solvent, then the solution obtained is brought to the desired temperature, directly or gradually, under normal pressure or under an adequate vacuum, depending on whether it is desired to obtain the polyamide in the form of a powder. , by precipitation, or in the form of a film, by evaporation of the solvent.
The solvents which are preferably used are N-dimethylacetamide, N-dimetylformamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and dimethylsulfoxide. It is also possible to use a mixture of these solvents or a mixture of these solvents and other inert solvents such as xylene, acetone and di- or tri-ethylene glycol dimethyl ether.

of oxygen or sulfur in the ring or more of these residues linked directly or by at least one of the following radicals
EMI0002.0025
while also adding the amount of carbonyl compound necessary so that there is, in the reaction mixture, half a mole of carbonyl compound for each isocyanate group.
As regards the latter polyisocyanates, use will preferably be made of those mentioned in the additional patent cited above, namely triisocyanato-4,4 ', 4 "-, triphenylmethane, triisocyanato-2,4,4'-diphenylether, triisocyanato -4,4 ', 4 "-triphenylphosphate, triisocyanato-2,4,6-methyl-1-benzene, triisocyanato-2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-benzene, triisocyanato-1,3,7 -naphthalene, triisocyanato-2,4,4'-diphenyl, triisocyanato-2,4,4'-methyl-3-diphenylmethane, tetraisocyanato-2,2 ', 5,5'-dimethyl-4,4'-diphenylmethane, polyisocyanato-polyphenylene-polymethylene, polyisocyanato-polyoxyphenylene. 14 g of diisocyanato-4,4'-diphenyl ether and 12 g are dissolved,

To 70 g of this viscous solution is added, with stirring and heating at 80 ° C., a solution of 1.2 g of triisocyanato-4,4 ', 4 "-triphenylthiophosphate and 0.845 g of pyromellic acid dianhydride in 20 cm3 of N-Dimethylacetamide Heating and stirring of the mixture of the two solutions is continued for 30 minutes.
The mixture is then poured into the same flat-bottomed container as that mentioned above and this container is placed in an oven in which the pressure is reduced to 100 mm of mercury. Heat gradually and maintain the temperature at different levels according to the following program: 1 hour at 60 () C, 20 hours at 70 C and 2 hours at 80 C.
The film formed is then detached from the bottom of the container and the temperature is gradually raised over 8 hours to 140 ° C. after having further reduced the pressure to a value of 50 mm of mercury. One then proceeds as indicated in Example 1, that is to say that one adds the same proportion of the same solution of triisocyanato-4,4 ', 4 "-triphenylthiophosphate and of acid dianhydride. pyromellic in N-dimethylacetamide and a film is prepared as indicated.
The film obtained exhibits properties similar to that of Example 1.
Example 6 A mixture of 7.5 g of diisocyanate-4,4'-diphenylmethane, 5.04 g of diisocyanato-4,4'-triphenylphosphate, of 2.2 g is dissolved. of triisocyanato-4,4 ', 4 "-triphenyl-methane, 5.08 g of pyromellic acid and 8.5 g of pyromellic acid dianhydride in 130 cc of N-dimethylacetamide and the solution is poured. obtained in a cylinder 500 cm long and 5 cm in diameter.
The solution is stirred by means of a vibro-mixer while bubbling a current of air through it with a flow rate of 1 liter per minute and maintaining the temperature at 40.1 ° C. for 5 hours. The solution is then transferred to a glass flask and kept for 15 hours at room temperature. The solution is then heated to 70 ° C. under a pressure of 15 mm of mercury for the time necessary to evaporate part of the solvent and increase the viscosity of the solution.
The viscous solution is then spread on a glass plate which is placed in an oven in which the pressure is lowered to 100 mm of mercury. Heat gradually and maintain the temperature at different levels according to the following program : 3 hours at 600 C, 3 hours at 701 C and 3 hours at 800 C.
The film formed is then detached from the glass plate and the temperature is gradually raised over 8 hours to 1400 ° C. after having further reduced the pressure to a value of 50 mm of mercury. The pressure in the oven is then brought back to atmospheric pressure and heating is continued for 6 hours, gradually raising the temperature to 2500 ° C. Finally, the temperature is raised to 300 ° C. and this temperature is maintained for 3 hours.
A transparent film is obtained, flexible, resistant to repeated folding and insoluble in organic solvents.
