Abstract
1,227,345. Thixotropic emulsions. PETROLITE CORP. 19 Oct., 1967, No. 47574/67. Heading B1V. [Also in Divisions C1, C3 and C5] A thixotropic emulsion comprises at least 85% by volume of an oily phase, not more than 10% by volume of a non-oily phase and 0.05% to 5% by volume of an emulsifier. The oily phase may include animal, vegetable and mineral oils with or without solid paraffins and asphalts, hydrocarbon solvents and solutions of e.g. pentachlorophenol in such solvents, and other organic liquids. The non-oily phase may be water, aqueous acid or brine, ethyl or methyl alcohol, pyridine, pentaborane, dihydropentaborane, aluminium borohydride, hydrazine and its derivatives The emulsion may include antifreeze, corrosion inhibitor and biocidal additives (exemplified), suspended clays or pigments, metal hydrides or nitrides; inorganic salts. Preferred emulsifiers are oxyalkylated compounds, the optimum proportion of each kind of oxyalkyl group present in a given emulsifier being determined by mixing standard quantities of non-oily phase and of the emulsifier and finding the maximum amount of oily phase which can be fully incorporated into the emulsion. Other emulsifiers are mentioned.
