[Also in Division C5] Novel N-substituted fatty acid amides of the formula wherein R is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 15 to 19 carbon atoms and R<SP>1</SP> is C 5-17 alkyl are prepared by reacting the appropriate fatty acids, fatty acid halides, lower alkyl esters or glycerides of the fatty acids, or acid anhydrides of the formula R.CO.O.CO.R<SP>2</SP> wherein R<SP>2</SP> is the same as R, C 1-4 alkyl or C 1-4 alkoxy, with the corresponding amine. Therapeutic compositions for lowering the cholesterol level in the blood containing the above novel compounds as active ingredients and pharmaceutically acceptable carriers. The compositions are suitable for oral administration.
