Abstract
1,227,156. Substitute natural gas. GAS COUNCIL. 12 Nov., 1969 [13 Nov., 1968], No. 53772/68. Heading C5E. Substitute natural gas is made by steamreforming a hydrocarbon feedstock over a catalyst in a cyclically operated process and subjecting the gases so produced to methanation with additional steam over a catalyst. The feedstock may have 3 to 7 C atoms per molecule, and the first catalyst may be Ni/U on alumina. More than one steam-reformer may be used alternately, and each cycle may be controlled by time or temperature. The gas may be cooled and scrubbed before being methanated, and the methanation reactor should be cooled, e.g. by using cooling coils in the catalyst, by recycling gas, or interstage cooling between a plurality of catalyst beds. The C.V. of the final gas may be adjusted by adding propane or butane, with or without CO 2 removal.
