Abstract
1,227,104. Luminescent screens. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 17 Nov., 1969 [5 Dec., 1968], No. 56240/69. Heading C4S. [Also in Division C3] A method of coating a fluorescent lamptube comprises making an aqueous suspension of phosphor particles, flowing same over tube surface, drying, then lehring to effect bonding of the phosphor particles to the glass, the suspension containing by weight based on the dry phosphor 0À05 to 0À3% Ba(NO 3 ) 2 and from 0À3 to 0À9% of a temporary binder mix of ammoniacal carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and 10 to 75% polyvinylmethyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer (PVM/MA), the aqueous suspension having a basic pH of 8 to 13, preferably 9 to 11. The phosphor may be Sn and Mn activated calcium halophosphate and after firing may be milled in an aqueous PVM/MA suspension and washed with ammoniated ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid or sulphamic acid, then size classified. Ammonium nitrate may be added to the suspension as a 15 to 25% water solution and should be in amounts 0À1 to 2À5%, preferably 0À25 to 1À0% of the dry phosphor. 10% PVM/MA and 90% CMC may be used with an upper limit of 75% of PVM/MA, preferably 50%. Binder mix concentrations based on the dry phosphor are preferably 0À4 to 0À6% e.g. 0À55% for CaHPo 4 . Coating may be by down flushing and lehring at 625 to 650 C.
