Abstract

122,694. Kelly, R. T. Jan. 30, 1918 Crutches. - A collapsible crutch comprises a series o tubular sections adapted to telescope or to be connected by bayonet joints or hinges, and is fitted with a crutch head detach. ably connected to the top sec. tion by a bayonet joint. In the form shown, the sections A, C, D, E are telescopic, the lower end of each tube being contrated at J to form an internal shoulder M, and the upper end of the next section being expanded at L to form a shoulder K coacting with the shoulder M to limit the extension of the tubes. Springs O, connected by rivet pins P to the inner members of the joints, carry latches N passing through slots in the tubes to hold the crutch in the extended position. The head F is formed with a spigot G connected to the upper section E by a bayonet joint. A ferrule B of rubber, leather or metal is provided. In modifications, each joint may be provided with two or more pairs of latches N spaced apart so that the length of the crutch may be adjusted, the sections may be arranged to extend automatically under the action of coiled springs when a catch is released, or the sections may be formed so that the contracted end of one takes into the expanded end of the next and is connected thereto by a bayonet joint. According to the Provisional Specification the crutch head may be arranged to fold or collapse, the tubular telescopic sections may be held in the extended position by pins or bayonet joints, or the sections may be non-telescopic but hinged together by stop hinges allowing flexure in one direction only and provided with springs to prevent accidental flexion.
