Fabrics with multiple superposed coatings; coating fabrics in long lengths.-Relates to artificial leather and consists in producing a coated fabric by applying to a fabric one or more coats of a film-producing nitrocellulose composition, each coat being dried after its application, and then applying a coat of plastic material, preferably by means of calender rolls. An undried coat of a cementing material, which may be a nitrocellulose composition, may be applied prior to tlie coat of plastic material, and the plastic material may be a nitrocellulose, plastic. Fig. 2 shows an apparatus for carrying out the latter part of the process. The fabric from a roll 38 tensioned by a friction band 39, passes over a roll 40 to a doctor 41 having adjustable side cheeks 45, where the cementing coat is applied. It then passes between rolls 3, 4 of a calender, where it receives the coat of plastic material which is supplied between side cheeks 32 to the rolls 2, 3. The rolls 2, 3, 4 are provided with keyed gears on each end of their spindles so arranged that, with one set of gears, all the rolls rotate at the same speed and, with the other set of gears, the middle roll rotates at a higher speed.
