The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein X-Y represents >CH(α)-CH 2 -, >CH(#)-CH 2 - or >C=CH- and Z represents >C = O, >C = NOH, >CH-NRR<SP>1</SP> (α or #) or >CH-OR<SP>11</SP> (α or #) where R and R<SP>1</SP> are each H or alkyl and R<SP>11</SP> is H or aliphatic carboxylic acyl, and wherein when Z is >C = O or >C = NOH and X-Y is saturated then a #<SP>4</SP>-double bond may be present. These compounds are prepared from compounds of formula wherein Z<SP>1</SP> is as Z or is a salified >CH-NRR<SP>1</SP> group, X 1 - is an anion of an organic or inorganic acid and X-Y and the optional #<SP>4</SP>-double bond are as defined above, by treating them, in a mixture of a water-miscible organic solvent and water, with a compound which has an alkaline reaction in the presence of water. Compounds of Formula II (wherein X 1 -is ClO 4 -) are prepared from the corresponding 22,N-saturated bases by the successive actions of mercuric acetate/acetic acid and perchloric acid, and fractional crystallization of the resulting mixture of isomeric imonium perchlorates.
