Abstract

Articles of luggage, for example, on an endless conveyer 1 are released at intervals by a rotary gate 15 on to a further endless conveyer 13 feeding a crescent-shaped stationary surface 10 around the outside of which runs a series of carriages 5 of an endless conveyer 3. The conveyer 3 drives by way of claws (26), Fig. 3 (not shown), a rotary feeder, which in turn controls the gate 15, and which comprises four cradles each with one limb 11 to entrain an article on the surface 10 at the angular speed of the conveyer 3 and a further limb 12 to push the articles radially and transfer the same on to a carriage 5. A fixed cam 14 co-operates with the cradles to provide the radial movement. As the articles are transferred to a carriage a code may be affixed to the carriage to ensure the discharge of the article at a desired destination. Two or more rotary feeders 4 may be arranged together with the conveyer 3 passing on alternate sides. Spring plates (34), Fig. 4 (not shown), may be pivoted on the limbs of the cradles to cushion the contact with the articles.
