Abstract
1,226,307. Chain saws. SOLO KLEINMOTOREN G.m.b.H. 26 Jan., 1970 [4 Feb., 1969], No. 3606/70. Heading B5L. In a portable chain saw having an arm 12 around which a saw chain is driven by an internal combustion engine 1, handles, e.g. 15, are rigidly connected with the saw arm 12, and the engine 1 is attached through vibration damping elements 21 to a housing part 11 rigidly connected with the saw arm. In one embodiment the elements 21 are of rubber and are situated between a vibrating part, which includes engine 1, crank case 2, crank-shaft 4, chain-drive pinion 5, silencer 6, ignition device 7, fan 8, starter 9 and centrifugal clutch 10, and a non-vibrating part, which includes the housing part 11, fuel and oil tanks 13, 14, the saw arm 12, the handle 15 and a carburetter. The carburetter is joined to the engine cylinder by a flexible rubber pipe. To prevent relative motion of the vibrating and non-vibrating parts in the direction of the axis of the saw arm a distance part is provided. This may, as shown, be a link rod 26 pivoted at one end to a bolt 27 on the saw arm support and at the other end to a neck 28 on the crankcase 2. Alternatively, it is a stop on the vibrating part which engages a counter-stop on the crank-case. To ensure that the vibrations occur in the direction perpendicular to the axis of the saw arm the piston of the engine is arranged with its axis in this direction. Also the rotating masses of the engine are balanced but the reciprocating masses are not. The chain drive pinion 5 may be on the engine crank-shaft as shown, or may be connected by an elastic coupling to a centrifugal clutch on the crank-shaft.
