Abstract
1,226,264. Moderator structures. NUCLEAR POWER GROUP Ltd. 11 March, 1970 [30 May, 1969], No. 27491/69. Heading G6C. A reactor core comprises an assembly of graphite blocks arranged vertically in spaced columns with the individual blocks of a column located with respect to one another to maintain alignment, at least some of the uppermost blocks of the columns defining a face of the core, to or from which blocks are inserted into or removed from the core, having laterally displaceable members adapted to engage the sides or displaceable members of corresponding uppermost blocks of adjacent columns to maintain within predetermined limits a fixed spacing of the columns, these members being retractable to allow removal of the uppermost block and the other blocks of a column. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, a graphite block 1 of hexagonal cross-section has a central cavity 2 and six laterally displaceable graphite members 3a-3f housed in openings 4 in the sides of the block. This graphite block 1 is for location at the uppermost end of a column of graphite blocks. The members 3 are moved laterally by means of an actuating member 5 which moves axially between the positions shown on the left- and righthand sides of the Figure. The member 5 is of steel and has a flange 5a which acts as a radiation shield. A portion of the member 5 below the flange 5a is tapered and acts against steel balls or rollers 6 prevented from falling when unloaded by springs. The transmission of the displacing force to the members 3 is therefore by means of a rolling action which minimizes the force required. When the block 1 is lifted, the members 3 will tend to retract or simply slide over the surfaces of adjacent blocks. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the displaceable members are moved laterally by an enlarged end of a control rod guide tube which has a steel ring insert to directly engage one end of each displaceable member. One purpose of the ring is to accommodate by its distortion extreme conditions of thermal expansion.
